I love studying at Christchurch North College because I feel welcomed, supported and part of the school community. Christchurch is also a beautiful place to live, with nature, activities and so many new things to explore. Studying here has given me a great balance between learning, making friends and enjoying life in New Zealand

Why Christchurch North College?

Christchurch North College (CNC) is a unique charter school dedicated to re-engaging students who have struggled to thrive in mainstream schooling. Many of our students learn in different ways, and some have found traditional school environments overwhelming due to factors such as learning differences, being neurodiverse or experiencing challenges with wellbeing. A number of our students have also faced experiences that make engaging with learning more difficult. At CNC, we provide a safe, supportive, and personalised environment where every student can build confidence, reconnect with learning, and achieve academic success at their own pace.

What sets CNC apart from other schools is our intensive wraparound pastoral care. This includes in-depth support for students and their families, combining academic guidance, therapy, and wellbeing initiatives to create a holistic approach to learning. Our personalised programmes ensure that each student progresses according to their own abilities and stage, with a focus on building resilience, self-esteem, and motivation.

For international students, CNC offers a unique opportunity to experience this approach in a small, inclusive, and supportive environment. We welcome students who are seeking a more individualised learning pathway, where attention to personal growth and academic achievement is at the heart of the school experience. International students enrich our school community, providing opportunities for cultural exchange and broadening perspectives for all students.

At CNC, international students are fully integrated into school life while having access to dedicated spaces and support structures. Our strong pastoral care framework, literacy and ESOL programmes, and homestay arrangements ensure that students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally. Through daily wellbeing check-ins and ongoing monitoring by our International Director, we ensure that every student is progressing and feeling confident in their learning environment.

Our outdoor education and experiential learning programmes further enhance the CNC experience, allowing international and domestic students to learn, explore, and grow together through practical, hands-on activities. This approach helps students develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while fostering a respect for the environment and a sense of achievement.

Choosing CNC means selecting a school where your child will be seen, supported, and empowered to succeed. Our small size and personalised approach ensure that international students receive extra care and attention, enabling them to thrive academically, socially, and personally. We are committed to providing a learning environment that is safe, engaging, and inspiring, giving every student the opportunity to reach their potential.

Our Facilities and Learning Environment

At Christchurch North College, we provide a welcoming and flexible learning environment designed to support personalised learning and student wellbeing. Our smaller class sizes allow for meaningful relationships between students and staff, creating a calm and supportive atmosphere where learners can feel confident and engaged.

Our learning spaces are designed to be adaptable, with a mix of classrooms and breakout areas that support both group work and independent study. Students are able to work at their own pace in environments that suit their learning needs, with access to support when required.

We offer a range of specialist learning areas, including science, art, music, and creative spaces, all supported with appropriate equipment to encourage hands-on and engaging learning experiences. Music is an important part of student life at CNC, including opportunities to participate in waiata (Māori songs), supporting cultural understanding and connection.

Students also have access to a Food Technology and Hospitality learning area, where they take part in practical cooking programmes. These sessions support the development of essential life skills such as food preparation, kitchen safety, and independence.

Physical activity and wellbeing are supported through a variety of sports and recreational opportunities, including cricket, soccer, and pickleball, helping students to build confidence, teamwork, and resilience.

Our school also makes the most of its surroundings, incorporating outdoor spaces and local scenery into learning. Through our outdoor education programme, students engage in activities such as hiking, orienteering, and bushcraft, extending their learning beyond the classroom.

Overall, our environment provides a balance of academic, creative, practical, and physical learning opportunities, ensuring students are supported to succeed in a way that works for them.
